There have been multiple accidental “green light” approvals given by authorities for the importing of radioactive food from Japan. There is an exclusion zone due to radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan that is supposed to keep these radioactive foods out of the global market. However, experts are warning that food produced in these zones may have made it to grocery stores.
Mushrooms are among some of these foods so you may want to be careful about the source of any mushrooms you eat, or any mushroom supplements you take, and ensure they are from reliable sources outside of Japan. Medicinal mushrooms such as maitake, shiitake, and Agaricus, and other mushrooms are often sourced from Japanese soil.
Ever since March 2011, when a deadly earthquake rocked Japan and created a tsunami, which also damaged the Daiichi nuclear power plant in Fukushima, radiation has been spilling out of the plant and into the water, earth, air, and subsequently, the food chain. Fish as well as vegetables and other products grown from the soil have been tainted with the deadly radiation levels, which can cause cancer.

The radioactive materials from the downed nuclear power plant in Japan, which settled into the earth around the planet, are also of concern to many, although so far tests have revealed fairly safe levels of radiation globally.
Direct streams under the ocean due to currents and other factors have made certain areas along the west coast of the Americas also higher in radiation levels compared to areas less impacted by the outflow of radiation; but the foods that are supposed to have been kept from the public, grown specifically in the exclusion zones in Japan, actually have entered the public marketplace, which has a lot of people concerned.
Foods imported from Japan have been restricted for some time now, but it is the human factor that has caused the problem.
